The Suburban Rail Loop East is Victoria’s largest transport infrastructure project, connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs via a new 26-kilometre underground rail line from Cheltenham to Box Hill. The new Monash Station will be located at the corner of Normanby and Howleys Roads, delivered as part of the AU$3.6 billion tunnelling and station package by the Suburban Connect consortium of ACCIONA, CPB Contractors and Ghella. Early works to relocate utilities, modify road intersections and construct tunnel access structures were completed in 2025, with main works commencing in April 2026 to establish the construction site for station building and tunnel boring activities. Tunnel boring is expected to begin in early 2027, progressing north beneath Monash University’s Clayton campus, with the station serving the University, CSIRO, the Australian Synchrotron and the wider Monash Technology Precinct from 2035.

Key aspects of the project include:

The Suburban Rail Loop East is Victoria’s largest transport infrastructure project, connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs via a new 26-kilometre underground rail line from Cheltenham to Box Hill. Cheltenham is the southern terminus of the SRL East tunnels, with works forming part of the AU$3.6 billion tunnelling and station package delivered by the Suburban Connect consortium of ACCIONA, CPB Contractors and Ghella. Crews at Cheltenham are relocating underground services and clearing the site of a former petrol station to prepare the ground for tunnelling and the new underground station, with tunnel boring machines launching from nearby Clarinda to build the tunnels through to Cheltenham. Cheltenham is also one of three southern stations, alongside Clayton and Monash, planned to connect passengers to the orbital rail network from 2035.

The Suburban Rail Loop East is Victoria’s largest transport infrastructure project, connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs via a new 26-kilometre underground rail line from Cheltenham to Box Hill. The Clayton works form part of the AU$3.6 billion tunnelling and station package awarded to the Suburban Connect consortium, comprising ACCIONA, CPB Contractors and Ghella, covering 16 kilometres of twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley and two new underground station boxes. At Clayton, crews have completed all 123 reinforced concrete diaphragm wall panels forming the station box and the underground passenger connection to the existing Clayton Station, clearing the way for excavation to begin. The new Clayton station is planned to connect passengers to the orbital rail network from 2035.

The Ferris Road Level Crossing Removal replaces a dangerous and congested level crossing in Melton, in Melbourne’s outer west, with a new road bridge over the rail line. The project was delivered by an alliance including Fulton Hogan, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line and the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), as part of a $229 million contract that also covers the Hopkins Road level crossing removal in Truganina. The new bridge includes a separated pedestrian and cycling path, replacing boom gates that around 16,000 vehicles a day previously had to navigate. The new road bridge opened to traffic in July 2026, forming part of the broader Melton level crossing removal program alongside the Coburns Road and Exford Road projects.

Key aspects of the project include:

  • New road bridge over the rail line, removing the Ferris Road level crossing
  • Separated pedestrian and cycling path built into the new bridge
  • Part of a $229 million alliance contract covering Ferris Road and Hopkins Road

Works involve significant utility relocation and protection along the length of the corridor to accommodate the new rail infrastructure. The project is delivered along a busy urban corridor, requiring close coordination with existing traffic and utility networks.
