Suburban Rail Loop East – Cheltenham

Project: Suburban Rail Loop East – Cheltenham

Principal Contractor: CPB Contractors and ACCIONA

The Suburban Rail Loop East is Victoria’s largest transport infrastructure project, connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs via a new 26-kilometre underground rail line from Cheltenham to Box Hill. Cheltenham is the southern terminus of the SRL East tunnels, with works forming part of the AU$3.6 billion tunnelling and station package delivered by the Suburban Connect consortium of ACCIONA, CPB Contractors and Ghella. Crews at Cheltenham are relocating underground services and clearing the site of a former petrol station to prepare the ground for tunnelling and the new underground station, with tunnel boring machines launching from nearby Clarinda to build the tunnels through to Cheltenham. Cheltenham is also one of three southern stations, alongside Clayton and Monash, planned to connect passengers to the orbital rail network from 2035.

Key aspects of the project include:

  • Relocation of underground services and site preparation ahead of tunnelling and station construction
  • Remediation and clearing of a former petrol station site
  • Construction of a new underground Suburban Rail Loop station at Cheltenham, the southern terminus of the SRL East tunnels
  • Delivery by the Suburban Connect consortium of ACCIONA, CPB Contractors and Ghella

HCS is engaged on the project to provide Underground Service Locating services.
