St Kilda Road Bike Lanes – Zone 1 to 3

Project: St Kilda Road Bike Lanes – Zone 1 to 3

Principal Contractor: ACE Contractors

The St Kilda Road Bike Lanes project is a $30.5 million Victorian Government initiative delivering new kerbside bike lanes that physically separate drivers and cyclists along one of Melbourne’s busiest tram corridors and most active cycling routes. ACE Contractors delivered Zones 1 to 3 of the project, covering Linlithgow Avenue to Dorcas Street, Toorak Road to Union Street, and Union Street to Charnwood Road, with the central zone around the Anzac Station precinct delivered separately by Metro Tunnel contractors. The works included new coloured bike lane surfacing, bike boxes and bike lanterns at traffic light intersections, modified traffic signals to give cyclists priority, and DDA-compliant pedestrian crossings at key intersections. The separated lanes opened progressively through 2023, improving safety and visibility for the thousands of cyclists who use St Kilda Road each day.

Key aspects of the project include:

  • Separated kerbside bike lanes with new coloured surfacing along St Kilda Road
  • Bike boxes and bike lanterns installed at traffic light intersections
  • Modified traffic signals providing additional priority for cyclists
  • DDA-compliant pedestrian crossings and removal of kerb outstands for continuous bike lanes

HCS is engaged on the project to provide Underground Service Locating services.
