The Southern Apron Expansion delivered 13 hectares of new airfield pavement and services at Melbourne Airport, undertaken by Fulton Hogan for client Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne (APAM). The $92 million project was divided into two main areas of work, the Southern Apron Expansion and the Sierra Apron Infill, and included 23 new Code C aircraft parking bays along with the relocation of freight aircraft operations. Works comprised 27,000 square metres of asphalt and 110,000 square metres of concrete pavement construction, carried out in a live airside environment. The project was completed with no unplanned impact on aircraft operations, including over the Christmas period, and the Sierra Apron Infill opened for operations more than a year ahead of the contracted end date.
